Clinical Simulation and Skills Laboratories

Goal

The laboratories serve both the undergraduate and graduate programs in the School of Nursing. For the undergraduate students, they provide a safe and private environment that is conducive for learning basic nursing skills and health assessment techniques before they go into the clinical area. Lab groups for the undergraduate students are kept small to facilitate individualized instruction. The labs are available for graduate students taking advanced health assessment to further develop skills for their specialty areas.

Facilities

The Clinical Simulation Laboratory contains state of the art computerized manikins for clinical simulation. These manikins can be programmed to speak, exhibit various symptoms and respond to various nursing interventions. The lab was opened in Fall 2006 and is also used for skills training. It is located opposite the clincial skills lab.

The Nursing Skills Lab consists of 2 rooms located in Gowan Hall, across from the Donley Technology Center. This area has 11 simulated patient areas. In the Nursing Biology building there is a small clinic with 3 complete examination rooms available for graduate students. This is a comfortable working area for 6 students.

The office for the Skills Lab is located in the lab. This space is used for individualized student instruction when needed. The office contains files on teaching material (videotapes, computer assisted instruction, models & simulators). This is available to faculty and students. A selection of texts and reference materials is kept for student use also.
