  Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Where can I get a copy of the Quality-Caring Model©?

A: Many hospitals and schools of nursing have free online access to OVID for nurses.  For those individuals who do not have access to a nursing library or online services through OVID, the article can be purchased online through the journal, Advances in Nursing Science

APA Reference: Duffy, J.R. & Hoskins, L. M. (2003). The Quality-Caring Model©: Blended dual paradigms.  Advances in Nursing Science, 26(1), 77-88.

Q: Is there more than one Caring Assessment Tool (CAT)?

A: Dr Duffy (1992) studied the caring competencies of nursing students.  In 1993, Dr. Duffy investigated the influence of nursing administrators caring behaviors on staff nurse satisfaction and retention.  Therefore, Dr. Duffy developed the Caring Assessment Tool (CAT) in three versions: patient, administrative, and education.  The CAT for patients, measures patients' perceptions of nurse caring behaviors.   The CAT-edu was developed to measure faculty caring behaviors as perceived by students. The CAT-adm was developed to investigate the influence of nursing administrators caring behaviors on staff nurse satisfaction and retention.

Q: Has the Caring Assessment Tool (CAT) update been completed?

A: The CAT for patients which measures patients' perceptions of nurses was updated in July, 2006 after a psychometric evaluation.  The new instrument has 36 items.

Q: How can I obtain a copy of the Caring Assessment Tool (CAT)?

A: Please contact Dr. Duffy by e-mail: Duffy@cua.edu.

Q: Is the Caring Assessment Tool (CAT) being used internationally?

A: Currently, the CAT has been translated into Japanese for the use in a large study at Yamaguchi University in Yamaguchi, Japan.
