School of Nursing Faculty Advocates for Nursing Grants on Capitol Hill
Washington, DC – Barbara Moran, PhD, CNM, Assistant Professor in the School of Nursing at The Catholic University of America, visited Capitol Hill on September 12th to advocate for increased federal funding for Title VIII Nursing Workforce Programs. These programs provide training for entry-level and advanced degree nurses, and include loan repayment and scholarships.
Offices visited include Senator John Warner (VA-R), Senator James Webb (VA-D), and Representative Thomas Davis (VA-R). At each meeting, Moran discussed the nursing shortage crisis, and asked that Congress fund Title VIII programs at $170 million in fiscal year 2008 in order to increase the number of individuals able to enter the workforce.
Dr. Moran’s meetings were held in conjunction with a lunch briefing on Capitol Hill entitled "Who Will Care for You? How the Title VII & VIII Programs Improve the Supply, Distribution, and Diversity of the Health Professions Workforce."
Dr. Moran is the President-Elect of the Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN), a nonprofit membership organization representing more than 22,000 health care professionals in the U.S., Canada, and abroad.
