The Latino Nursing Career Opportunity Program Scholarships

The Latino Nursing Career Opportunity Program has scholarships of up to $7,000 per year available to Latino students who meet the following criteria:

  • Undergraduate students who are declared nursing majors
  • Enrolled full-time in a professional nursing program.
  • U.S. citizens, non-citizens, or foreign national who possesses a visa permitted permanent residence in the United States.  [Individuals on temporary or student visas are ineligible.]
  • Students who are educationally disadvantaged or economically disadvantaged.  Educationally disadvantaged includes:
    • Persons from high schools with low average SAT/ACT scores or below the average state test result
    • Persons from a school district where 50% or less of graduates go to college
    • Persons with a diagnosed physical or mental impairment that substantially limits participation in educational experiences
    • Persons for whom English is not their primary language and for whom language is still a barrier to their academic performance
    • Persons who are first generation to attend college
    • Persons from high schools where at least 30% of enrolled students are eligible for free or reduced price lunches.

Economically disadvantaged is determined by family income, regardless of the age of the student.  Figures used to determine low-income eligibility for the purpose of this grant program for FY 2004 are:

Scholarship recipients must maintain satisfactory academic progress (as required by the CUA Office of Financial Aid) in the School of Nursing.  A copy of the University’s Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy for all students receiving financial aid is available on the CUA website:   http://financialaid.cua.edu/academics.

 

The Latino Nursing Career Opportunity Program also has stipends of up to $250/month, maximum $3,000 to full-time undergraduate BSN students who are economically disadvantaged (see income criteria, above).  Stipends must be used for living expenses and cannot be used for tuition.  Stipend recipients must maintain a 3.0 GPA.
