Joyce E. Johnson recently served as Senior Vice President & Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and Associate Dean & Clinical Professor at the Rutgers University School of Nursing in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Her earlier successes included CNO and Hospital Operations Chief at both the Georgetown University Hospital and the Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC.
In addition to holding a number of faculty appointments, Dr. Johnson has lectured throughout the country, received numerous regional & national awards, and published over 100 articles on nursing shortage issues, nursing management, information systems technology, patient safety and quality improvement. She has considerable experience serving on editorial boards of several nursing journals and periodicals, and for 13 years founded and published Nursing Connections, the first nationally refereed scholarly journal to be published from a practice setting. Dr Johnson has served on the Boards of the National League for Nursing, the American Organization for Nurse Executives (AONE) and the Board of Visitors for the Georgetown University School of Nursing and Health Science.
As a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing, Dr. Johnson has participated as a member of the Fellow Selection Committee, the Magnet Expert Panel, and remains an active member of the prestigious AAN EdgeRunner cohort. She also serves as a member of AONE’s National Education Committee.
Dr. Johnson has offered testimony on contemporary health care issues for several Congressional committees and provides independent consultant services to nurse managers at all levels focusing primarily on professional advancement through research and publication, academic achievement, the advancement of quality and safety, and the acquisition of cogent leadership essentials.
